Elton Mayo is the main person behind this management approach. He undertook a series of studies (1927-32) named the ‘Hawthorne Studies’.

Made changes to work environment, always explaining them and why he was doing them
Allowed staff more responsibility of over work practices and how it was done.
Relaxed the rigid rules of social interaction.
Elton found that their productivity had increased. They had formed a team and valued working together. Their social needs were met and they were happier.
