Task Design

The complexity of the tasks to be performed by employees is directly related to the types of technology utilised. 

• In a high volume setting, the technology does most of the work and the tasks can be repetitive and monotonous. 

• In a high variety setting, tasks require great skill and allows employees more discretion in their decision making to produce the output.

Think also about a service operation - a bank, for example. 

• High volume services like withdrawing cash has been automated (ATM). 

• Low volume services require a trained specialist (providing a mortgage to a customer). 

Then of course, the technology needed and the task required will need to be configured in a way to maximise efficiency in producing the output.
