Firms can either focus on being the cost leader in an industry OR focus on producing differentiated goods and services.

Typically, however, operations teams try to combine both of these: Domino's, for example, is always finding ways to decrease expenses (robot delivery) and is always offering differentiated product lines (desserts, pizza bases) to win consumer sales.
