The 3 Core Actions for Business Intelligence

The 3 Core Actions for Business Intelligence Diagram Big Time BS

Business educators should spend an equivalent amount of time across these 3 Core Actions.

Unfortunately, the majority of business teaching involves the delivery of content.

This framework helps teachers to effectively plan units and lessons, to reduce and streamline content delivery to make space for the critical activities of applying the content, and creatively communicating this content.

WHY?

To cultivate Business Intelligence which prepares students for:

  • Real world success post-school (long term)

Successful business people are not parrots of business theory. They know how to apply business theory to a range of situations intelligently and effectively, and can communicate their ideas in a range of formats and for a range of audiences.

  • Academic results and HSC examination success (short term - and metric for teacher efficacy)

Most of the HSC examination requires students to apply business theory to a randomly allocated business scenario or prompt, and then to create a textual response to a specific directive term. This needs to happen in real-time and under time pressure.

We also want to do this to add variety to our lessons, build relationships between students, provide opportunities for personal growth through trial and error, discussion and risk-taking, build engagement and motivation, practical skill development and make learning relevant and exciting.

Core Action 1
Content

Time spent on actions involving content delivery and recollection:

  • Streamlined notes to bypass time-consuming note-taking

  • Study Card systems to generate recall through spaced repetition and retrieval

Core Action 2
Application

Time spent on actions involving applying content to a range of businesses:

  • 'Business Brain' - Games and activities for drawing links between content and random businesses

  • 'Make a Statement' - Games for the mastery of financial statements

  • Open for Business time - holistic exploration of business news and videos

Core Action 3
Communication

Time spent on actions involving communicating business theory as it applies to a specific business scenario, and for a specific directive term:

  • 'The Kaizen Writing Cycle' - write, exemplar, feedback, self-reflection and idea theft

  • Short Response and Business Report writing - features and purpose

  • NESA Directive Terms - definitions, textual structures and key vocabulary
